Timber Treatment Specialists in Scotland

When contractors are dealing with structural timber in your property you want to know your property is in safe hands - that is why Wise Property Care have been trusted to carry out thousands of timber treatment repairs across Scotland for over 20 years.

What is a Timber Treatment?

A timber treatment is carried out when either structural or decorative timber has been damaged by issues such as woodworm, wet rot or dry rot, and the stability and durability of timber has been removed.

This can involve applying protective chemicals, fungicides or insecticides to protect the timber against further deterioration from wood boring insects, or fungal decay. Timber repairs and timber replacement may also be required if the damaged timber is no longer structurally sound. It is possible you have spotted signs of timber issues in your property, so a thorough timber survey is essential to understand what has caused the problem and identify the extent of the damage.

Timber Survey

A timber survey, or more commonly known as a damp and timber survey, is carried out by a PCA accredited surveyor to fully assess the condition of structural and decorative timber within a building. They will use their knowledge and experience along with specialist surveying equipment to make sure nothing is missed.

In Scotland damp is often the culprit behind timber decay in buildings, making it essential to fully investigate the outside and inside of a property to find any sources of moisture. They will then take time to fully investigate any affected timber.

Our Wise Property Care surveyors are typically CSTDB (Certificated Surveyor of Timber & Dampness in Buildings) or CSRT (Certified Surveyor in Remedial Treatments) qualified. This is a Property Care Association (PCA) qualification that indicates their expertise in identifying and diagnosing damp and timber related issues.

The surveyor will then provide you with a comprehensive damp and timber report detailing their findings with recommendations, if required.

Fungal Decay Timber Treatments

Fungal decay, namely wet rot and dry rot can cause significant damage to timber in Scottish properties. A surveyor will investigate thoroughly to find the full extent of the problem, and as wet rot and dry rot are both caused by prolonged moisture exposure, identifying the source is crucial. Unlike wet rot, dry rot is capable of spreading through masonry and plasterwork and can therefore damage vast quantities of timber across the whole of a property.

Treatments include removing all badly affected timber, applying fungicidal treatments to kill the dry rot spores and where necessary we will treat surrounding masonry with fungicide.

If you think you have dry rot in your property you should arrange for a timber survey to fully assess the problem as soon as possible.

Woodworm Timber Treatments

Woodworm is a common problem that requires timber treatments right across Scotland.  Woodworm larvae feed on and tunnel through timber, causing structural damage. If an active infestation is confirmed we will typically apply targeted insecticidal treatments that will penetrate into the timber and stop woodworm larvae from emerging.

Timber Treatment FAQs:

  • How much is timber treatment?

The costs for timber treatments depends on the type of treatment needed, the extent of the problem and the size and type of property. The issue may be caused by moisture ingress and may require some form of damp proofing. The best way to understand the costs involved is for a surveyor to carry out a damp and timber survey and provide recommendations for treatment in a survey report.

  • What does a timber specialist do?

A timber specialist is someone who has the PCA qualification CSRT or CSTDB and is experienced in identifying timber issues such as fungal decay and woodworm. They will assess the condition of timber and provide any findings in a detailed survey report.

  • What is a timber survey?

A timber survey is another name for a damp and timber survey, which will be carried out by a qualified surveyor who can identify issues relating to dampness and timber defects. Wise Property Care has a number of qualified surveyors who can carry out timber surveys across Scotland.

  • Can rotten wood be repaired?

Yes, it is possible to repair rotten timber, as long as it is caught early and the fungal decay problem is not too extensive. The first step is to identify and prevent the source of moisture before repairing any rotten timbers - otherwise the problem will return.

  • Can you stop wood rot from spreading?

Yes, you can remove the moisture source and treat the affected area or cut out any rotten sections of timber. For severe outbreaks, especially for dry rot, it is recommended you seek professional help to fully understand the extent of the problem.

  • What chemicals stop wood rot?

There are several chemicals that can be used to treat fungal decay, but the most common treatments in Scotland are boron-based fungicides. With any wood rot issue it is key to locate and stop the source of moisture first. This needs to be carried out before any chemical treatments, otherwise there is a risk to their long term success.

  • How to stop wood rot naturally?

For wood rot spores to germinate they require a moisture source. This needs to be removed to prevent any further spreading. If the timber is already rotten to the point it has lost its structural integrity, it will require specialist repairs.

  • Can I just paint over rotten wood?

No, it is not advised to simply paint over a rotten wood problem. If the wood is no longer structurally sound it will need to be replaced. If ignored the problem could spread and cause further damage over time, meaning more costly repairs.
